President's Day 2015

Partridge Hill - Friday, February 13, 2015

Washington's Birthday is a federal holiday in the U.S. celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States (actually born on February 22). Usually, it's commonly known as President's Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents, not just George Washington or Abraham Lincoln (born on February 12). The term "President's Day" was informally coined in a deliberate attempt to use the holiday to honor multiple presidents and is virtually always used that way today.

Many buinessess are open as usual and many stores hold sales on President's Day, while most federal offices are closed for the holiday obsered on Monday, February 16th this year. Some schools also close for the whole week as a mid-winter recess.

Another great choice on President's Day is to visit the Albany Institute of History & Art for free! The whole family will enjoy their new exhibit Triple Play! Baseball. A few additional activities that will be held at the Institute on Monday, February 16th will be:

  • Drop-In Art Making: 10am - 4:30pm

  • Gallery Talks at 1pm and 3:30pm

Valentine's Day 2015

Partridge Hill - Monday, February 09, 2015

Are you a diligent planner with all your Valentine's Day arrangements already made? Or are you an optimistic procrastinator hoping for a last minute brilliant idea that ends up working out perfectly? Either way, you're in luck, because the link below will provide you with plenty of great ideas for an exciting weekend celebrating this holiday.

Website: http://www.albany.com/valentine/

Here's some interesting background about the holiday: The origin of Valentine's Day and the story of its patron saint date back to the third century but at shrouded in mystery with bits of ancient Roman and Christian traditions. One popular story involves St. Valentine who was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. And during his imprisonment, he healed his jailer's daughter, for whom he developed an affection. An embellishment to this story starts that before his execution he wrote her a farewell letter signed "Your Valentine."

Well, whether you're in a relationship or not, loving and being loved is something we can all participate in. Giving a stranger an unexpected smile and getting one back, lending a hand when needed or hearing a genuine "thank you" ... these simple acts of kindness don't require planning, cost nothing, and yet cast a bit of sunshine on a winter's celebration of Valentine's Day! We hope your holiday is a wonderfully bright day!

GROUNDHOG DAY - Will Spring Come Early This Year?

Partridge Hill - Friday, January 30, 2015

February 2nd is Groundhog Day with the focal celebration in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The main celebrity for this event is a groundhog aptly named Punxsutawney Phil.

Folklore has it that when the groundhog emerges from his borrow early this Monday morning, if it's cloudy, then spring will be early, but if it's sunny and the groundhog sees its shadow, it will retreat back into its borrow and we're in for another six long weeks of winter! UGH!!!

For my sake and yours, I certainly hope that ol' Phil doesn't see his shadow because I sure am ready for Spring!

Is your Apartment Cluttered?

Partridge Hill - Thursday, January 15, 2015

Do you look through your apartment and see items everywhere? Do you wish you could de-clutter your apartment and have it nice and organized? If so, below are a few points on great ways to de-clutter your area and make it more efficient.

  1. Make a List - Make a list of the places/areas in your apartment that you want to de-clutter. Start with the easiest area to clean and when finished with the one area stop. Do a little at a time so it does not become overwhelming.
  2. Determine what you no longer need -  We all have those "items" that we hang onto year after year because we're just not ready to let it go but in all reality there is no purpose for them. Start with determining what items fall into that category and remove them from your life. Categories: "Keep in Room"; "Put Away in Another Room"; "Donate"; "Sell"; "Trash"; and "Recycle"
  3. Complete each task COMPLETELY -  When you start to organize a section, stick to that section. Do not start in one area and move onto the next before the original area has been finished. If you have items you are giving to friends, charity and/or recycling, make sure you remove those items from your apartment right away. If you tend to leave them sitting inside your apartment for too long it will remain in that spot.
  4. Be Prepare - Make sure before you start this process you have plenty of cardboard boxes, garbage bags and recycling bins on hand. Also, ensure you give yourself some extra time to complete the task. Good things come with time!
